Blavatsky gives the dates and duration of recen= t astrological ages, indicating that the year 1900 was to be the starting = point for the new Aquarian Age.=20=20 =20 HPB wrote that =93one of the several remarkable cycles=94 coming to a clos= e in the end of 19th century was =93the Messianic cycle of the Samaritan (a= lso Kabalistic) Jews of the man connected with Pisces=94. And she explaine= d: =93It is a cycle, historic and not very long, but very occult, lasting a= bout 2,155 solar years, but having a true significance only when computed b= y lunar months. It occurred [in] 2410 and 255 B.C., or when the equinox en= tered into the sign of the Ram, and again into that of Pisces=94. (1)=20=20 =20 Geoffrey Barborka commented her statement:=20 =20 =93Since 2155 years is the time-period for the duration of each of the cycl= es of the age of Aries and Pisces, and as the Piscean age began in 255 B.C.= , the date of the beginning of the Aquarian age is 1900 A.D.=94 (2)=20 =20 HPB saw that the expansion of higher mind brought about by the new age woul= d be dramatically painful at first.=20=20 =20 She added, referring to the equinox:=20=20 =20 =93When it enters, in a few years, the sign of Aquarius, psychologists will= have extra work to do, and the psychic idiosyncrasies of humanity will ent= er into a great change.=94=20=20 =20 In another text, this one dated September 1888, HPB gave similar indicatio= ns as to 1900, and revelead that September is the crucial month in counting= years with regard to occult Ages: =20 =93In its ceaseless and, also, too rapid flight along the path of Eternity,= Time has taken one mighty stride more: a step of twelve months=92 duration= toward the last day of our present age; also of the lives of many of us wi= thin, and of all of us beyond=97the ultimate frontier of our senile century= . In twelve years more the curtain will have dropped, shutting out the foot= lights from the actors and all the latter from the public view . . . . . = It is only then that many a scene enacted in the sad drama of life, and man= y an hitherto misunderstood attitude of some of the chief actors in that My= stery of the Age called Theosophy and its Societies, will appear in its tru= e light.=94 (3)=20 =20 By writing in 1888 and referring to =93twelve years=94, she w as clearly m= eaning the year 1900 as the line between the two ages.=20 =20 The transition of astrological ages is a complex process, though, and its e= ffects may take a few hundred years to become perfectly visible. One of the= occult time-cycles mentioned in the Mahatma Letters corresponds to 107 yea= rs (4), and only in 2007 we will complete this first and smaller cycle sinc= e the beginning of Aquarian age.=20=20 =20 The karma of this initial period of time can be expected to be processed an= d adjusted in 2007-2008.=20 =20 The 21st century is a strong numerological figure which equals 3 times 7 = =96 and HPB made a bright prophetical statement as to the karmic content = of this period:=20=20 =20 =93(...) Error is powerful only on the surface, prevented as she is by Occu= lt Nature from going any deeper; for the same Occult Nature encircles the w= hole globe, in every direction, leaving not even the darkest corner unvisit= ed. From an astrological point of view, Saturn is the = stern Master of the lower quaternary or basic self in human beings. That is= not a problem, though. The upper triad or spiritual soul has nothing to lo= se from the slow, powerful movements of that planetary spirit whose physic= al vehicle was called by Camille Flammarion the =93marvel of the solar sys= tem=94.=20=20 =20 When we think of this planet =96 with 34 moons and seven rings according= to present-day astronomical data (6) =96 we must bear in mind that ther= e=92s a great difference between its body and its spirit.=20 =20 HPB wrote:=20 =20 =93Saturn, =91the father of Gods=92 must not be confused with its namesake = =96 the planet of the same name (...) . The two =96 though in one sense id= entical, as are, for instance, physical man and his soul =96 must be separa= ted in the question of worship.=94 (7)=20=20 =20 So the material planet Saturn is the vehicle of the mythological Saturn. (1)=20 =20 2] There is an occult cycle of 107 years (2). Therefore, the year 2007 m= arks the close of this first time cycle within t he Aquarius age.=20 =20 3] September seems to be the month which counts for such calculation of ag= es. (3)=20 =20 4] September is also, for instance, the month when the new year occurs in= the Jewish tradition.=20 =20 5] The theosophical movement was created in September 1875, and not in No= vember that year. In November 17th there was a more public event, but not= the actual creation, which took place in 7 and 8 September.=20 =20 6] The United Lodge of Theosophists, ULT, gradually emerged in the period 1= 906-1909 ; and the year 1907 is significant in that process. ULT=92s fir= st one hundred years=92 cycle is already closing therefore in 2007, altho= ugh its completion will culminate in 18 th February 2009.=20 =20 7] In September 1900, the exact month and year of the closing of Pisces Age= , the last letter from a Mahatma was received by the movement. It got to A= nnie Besant, in London. The letter warned against, and anticipated the va= st majority of the grave mistakes which Adyar TS should NOT make, but whic= h it did make anyway, from that moment on. The full content of the 1900 L= etter was not discovered or published until 1987, during the following =93= effort of end-of-century=94. And it was not revealed by any member of the A= dyar TS, whose leaders kept to the policy of supressing its full text. The= task was done by Emmet Small.=20=20=20 =20 7] If September is the month that counts such ages, as HPB suggests, it = will be in September 2007 that the first 107 years=92 cycle will close. =20 8] That does not mean anything spectacular should be expected to occur next= September. Such cycles are occult and not external. Their visible effects= are gradual and both anticipate or follow actual chronological limits. In= talking about cycles, overlapping is part of the Law. =93When you have e= yes to see, it is already there=94.=20=20 =20 =20 A happy new year, Carlos.=20 =20 =20 =20 NOTES:=20 =20 (1) As to this, see: =93Collected Writings of H.P.B.=94, TPH, India, Volume= VIII, p. 174, footnote; b) =93Secret Doctrine Questions & Answers=94, b= y Geoffrey Barborka, Wizards Bookshelf, San Diego, USA, 2003, 197 pp., see = p. 100; c) =93Ever Onward=94, a subtitle in =93Notes from an Unpopular Phi= losopher=94, publisheed in =93Lucifer=94, September 1888, and =93Collected= Writings=94, H.P. That's, in part, why real Theosophy can only be understood by open minds. A small example of this inner unity among different things is the fact that common points between Ramana Maharshi and H. P. Blavatsky are most easy to find. Both of them worked with Jnana Yoga, although Ramana, acting already in the 20th century, limited himself to a more abstract level. Both worked with the teaching on the seven principles of consciousness, and in the same way. On the passing of time, for instance, Ramana taught, very much along HPB / Masters' line: "Since past and future have never been without the present, to know the eternal Now is to know the Truth. The changeless, infinite Self transcends time and space, which are relative to the body and the mind. The Sage who has realized the Self transcends both free-will and destiny, with which only the ignorant are concerned. To the ignorant the 'I' is the Self limited to the body ; to the Wise the 'I' is the Infinite Self." (1) William Q. Judge, on the other hand, wrote about a sort of meditation which goes on around the clock, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And Ramana Maharshi taught: "Setting apart time for meditation is only for the merest spiritual novices. A man who is advancing will begin to enjoy the deeper beatitude, whether he is at work or not. While his hands are in society, he keeps his head cool in solitude." (2) As to the search for happiness -- which is mentioned in the U. S. Declaration of Independence -- Ramana has something very simple and insightful to say: "Man's real nature is happiness. Happiness is inborn in the Self. His search for hapiness is an unconscious search for the true Self. The true Self is imperishable ; therefore when a man finds it, he finds a happiness which does not come to an end." (3) This is clearly Theosophy. Regards, Carlos. Below are the FACTS. In the 1897 edition of Volume III of THE SECRET DOCTRINE, there are (excluding H.P.B.'s esoteric papers at the back of this volume), 52 sections (or chapters) covering 432 pages of text. 40 of these sections or chapters of the SD Vol. III were SIMPLY transferred by Mr. Boris de Zirkoff into HPB's COLLECTED WRITINGS=20 (most of them into Vol. XIV). It should be clearly stated here that the ONLY EXISTING copies of these 40 sections are the printed version found in SD Vol. III. Mr. de Zirkoff had NO OTHER versions of these 40 sections to rely on or work with. Furthermore, these 40 sections constitute more than 300 pages of the text of SD III. For the remaining 12 sections of SD III which have corresponding text in the EARLIER Wurzburg manuscript, Mr. de Zirkoff and his team compared the two sets of text, etc. and then decided what to publish in the COLLECTED WRITINGS. IN SUMMARY: Mr. de Zirkoff transferred into the COLLECTED WRITINGS volumes (most of it into Volume XIV) these hundreds of pages of text DIRECTLY FROM Annie Besant's Vol. III. In other words, COLLECTED WRITINGS, Vol. 14 is heavily DEPENDENT on Annie Besant's 3rd Volume. In the Theosophical view, all these are secondary or derivative problems -- the symptoms of a disease. The primary, original problem, the cause of the disease, is the illusion of separateness, the notion that we are unconnected, independent beings whose particular welfare can be achieved at the expense of the general good. The primary challenge facing humanity is therefore to recognize the unity of our species and in turn our ultimate unity with all life in the universe. Despite the superficial cultural and genetic differences that divide humanity, we are a remarkably homogeneous species -- physically, psychologically, intellectually, and spiritually. Biologically, we are a single human gene pool, with only minor local variations. Psychologically and intellectually, we respond to stimuli in fundamentally the same way. Linguistically, behind the surface variations of the world's tongues, our underlying language ability is remarkably uniform. Spiritually, we have a common origin and a common destiny. Neither is the human species isolated from the rest of life in the universe. We are part and parcel of the totality of existence stretching from this planet Earth to the farthest reaches of the cosmos in every conceivable dimension. When we realize our integral connection with all other human beings, with all other life forms, with the most distant reaches of space, we will realize that we cannot either harm or help another without harming or helping ourselves. We are all one, not as metaphor, but as fact. Individual Theosophists engage in social, political, and charitable action as they are moved by their consciences and sense of duty to become so engaged. They are urged by the Theosophical tradition to realize the concept of Unity in practical responses to the challenges we face. Collectively and as Theosophists, however, we do not regard it as our special calling to be social, political, or charitable activists. Theosophy addresses the cause rather than the symptoms of the human disease. Theosophy seeks to make humanity aware -- intellectually, affectively, and experientially -- of our unity with one another and with the whole universe. From such awareness will flow naturally and inevitably a respect for differences, a wise use of the environment, the fair treatment of others, a sympathy with the afflictions of our neighbors, and the will to respond to those afflictions helpfully and lovingly. excerpt from the essay /A Portrait of Theosophy /by John Algeo http://origin.org/ucs/doc.cfm?e=1&ps=2&edit=1&fg=3176&fi=1124 From proto37@yahoo.com Tue Jan 02 05:39:19 2007 Return-Path: X-Sender: proto37@yahoo.com X-Apparently-To: theos-talk@yahoogroups.com Received: (qmail 5841 invoked from network); 2 Jan 2007 13:37:56 -0000 Received: from unknown (66.218.67.34) by m35.grp.scd.yahoo.com with QMQP; 2 Jan 2007 13:37:56 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO web32507.mail.mud.yahoo.com) (68.142.207.217) by mta8.grp.scd.yahoo.com with SMTP; 2 Jan 2007 13:37:56 -0000 Received: (qmail 71773 invoked by uid 60001); 2 Jan 2007 13:37:20 -0000 X-YMail-OSG: IVi.oNcVM1lfcTOp95dt6rI7lfjnBKCiywPC50ZCqdLzyv1mwauY.SeHXqKu9EhtyA-- Received: from [4.131.54.89] by web32507.mail.mud.yahoo.com via HTTP; Tue, 02 Jan 2007 05:37:20 PST Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2007 05:37:20 -0800 (PST) To: theos-talk@yahoogroups.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Message-ID: <154652.69563.qm@web32507.mail.mud.yahoo.com> X-Originating-IP: 68.142.207.217 X-eGroups-Msg-Info: 1:0:0:0 From: Mark Jaqua Subject: Hillerman Novels X-Yahoo-Group-Post: member; u=130276474; y=myvsPm3ACCsES5hP43YzTb4Pi0YvN4Cb92yhAD2E3Qt7qg X-Yahoo-Profile: proto37 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Yahoo-Message-Num: 39172 Hillerman Novels Tony Hillerman came out at the end of '06 with about his 20th novel situated in Navajo country in the 4-corners area of the US. "The Shape Shifter" was on the best sellers now and will be again when the paperback comes out. Hillerman is in his 80's, so this could be his last novel, but hopefully he'll get out a few more. What I like about Hillerman, beyond just being a good writer, is his mixing in of Traditional Navajo religion and philosophy in the plot of his mysteries. It's truly a beautiful philosophy, aimed at becoming in-tune or harmony with Nature and appreciation of its beauty. ('And in the desert, rocks, mountains and big sky of the US Southwest, one always has this reminder of the beauty of Nature around one.) The Traditional Navajos call this state of harmony with Nature "hozho" or "hozro," and it is the kingpin around which the rest of the religion spins. In Traditional Navajo culture (disappeared or disappearing now) there is no such thing as punishment for crime. If someone gets out of harmony with the rest of "the people" or "dineh," he is attempted to be brought back into harmony with a large variety or "sings" or ceremonies, which can last for anywhere from a day to 9 or 10 days. There is a different "sing" or cermony for every type of illness or crime, many such sings now being forgotten or having no "hatali," singer, or medicine-man which can perform them. These sings are composed of recitation of various myths of in their religious fables, sand paintings, and ceremony to bring the person back into harmony. Its a community event. In "Shape Shifter" Hillerman relates one of the origins - myths that we are held to be in the "4th world" now, after the destruction of the first 3 worlds. In the first 3 worlds we were not fully human, which we become in the 4th world. This might be analogous with the 4th round we are in now in Theosophical teachings, or the fourth Race (Am. Indians are held in Theosophy to be a 4th root-race people, like the Chinese, Mongolians, etc.) There is also a myth for the separation of the sexes. The only person in Navajo philosophy who cannot be brought back into harmony is the "witch" or shape-shifter. He's seen as being committed to evil and selfishness as a principle. A sure sign of a witch is someone who is rich while his relatives are poor. Greed and money- grubbing is one of the big crimes in Traditional philosophy. Another Navajo belief which tallies with Theosophy is about the "chindi." The chindi is the spook or bhut (Hindu) that a person leaves behind when he dies, the "shell." In some places Hillerman says that the Navajos believe in no after-life, but in "Shape Shifter" and later novels he says that the chindi is only the part left behind, that can't go on to the soul's other after-death great adventures - which is the Theosophical idea. If a persona dies inside the hogan, traditionally, the hogan is abandoned, and a hole is knocked in the wall in one direction, so that the spook can leave. A person is always taken outside to die. Hillerman went to an Indian school for years when young, so is not just an outsider, and also made a long effort to understand Navajo culture, so you might get a better picture of Navajo philosophy in his novels than in the dry-dust anthropological texts. - jake j. ------------------ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Do you really think every bad thing is only a "mistake?" (repost below) People do bad things because that is what some people are - they love it, and will not switch over to your viewpoint no matter how foolish you make yourself. What is right and left-hand paths? Go down to those barios in big-city Brazil and start talking brotherhood. You will still get robbed, laughed at, and maybe killed, if foolish enough. (People of course also make "mistakes" continually as well.) Dan writes: "...We are working on expanding the collection of letters now available at: http://BlavatskyLetters.NET ....We plan to also include the controversial HPB letters to Mr. Aksakoff and Mr. Solovyoff. When this material is posted, we will also include a link to Jake Jaqua's helpful summary questioning some of these letters and their content...." Am I being bought out? Ha. They are just Notes. Something also useful is Sordo's long letter to you on the HPB Letters (Maybe Edmonton has this online.) and also many of the comments Carlos has made. - jake j. ----------- <5b. In a published collection of HPB's letters, WHO is to determine which=20 letters are included or which letters should be totally removed and=20 expurgated???=20=20 Should readers, students, inquirers be allowed to read such "false"=20 letters or to even know of their existence? Furthermore, different editors of such collections might include or=20 exclude different letters. For example, Michael Gomes in his book THE DAWNING OF THE THEOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT quotes from two of the Aksakoff letters now=20 claimed to be false. In each instance, Mr. Gomes attributes what is said in these two letters to H.P.B. For example, Mr. Gomes writes (p. 185): "She wrote to Alexander Aksakov in October 1877..." and goes on to give a quote from one of the letters which some=20 students believe are false and forged. Furthermore, nowhere when quoting H.P.B.'s words from this letter,=20 does Mr. Gomes warn the reader of his book that he is quoting from=20 false letters. Boris de Zirkoff in his writings does the same thing. He quotes H.P.B.'s words from various letters to Askakoff. The very letters some students consider false. And no where does Mr. de Zirkoff in these instances warn the reader that he is quoting fake HPB. Sylvia Cranston also quotes from one of these supposed false letters to Aksakoff in her HPB biography. She quotes as though the=20 words in the letter are HPB's. And nowhere does she warn the reader=20 to beware of this letter or the similar letters from Aksakoff as=20 being false. It would appear that these three well-known Theosophical writers=20 believe the letters in question were written by Blavatsky. So once again: Who is to determine which letters are false and which letters are=20 true? In a published collection of HPB's letters, WHO is to determine which=20 letters are included or which letters should be totally removed and=20 expurgated???=20=20 Should readers, students, inquirers be allowed to read such "false"=20 letters or to even know of their existence? P. Blavatsky, Sylvia Cranston says Mr. Vs= evolod Soloviof is =93the Iago of Theosophy=94.=20=20 =20 This is a reference to that Shakespeare=92s character in =93Othello=94 wh= o infiltrates and makes intrigues in order to defeat =93the moor of Venic= e=94. Yet this was not an isolated example of Shakespeare=92s characters (r= ascals or heros) being alive and active within the theosophical movement.= Many other similar persons =96 and the acute contrast between them =96 = can be found among students of esoteric philosophy. Intermediary types wi= ll be found, too.=20=20=20=20=20 =20 In the thirteen decades of the modern theosophical movement (1875-2006), = conflicts for power have been generously fueled by envy, anger, slander, f= rustration, falsehood and other forms of spiritual ignorance. They can b= e better understood and explained, and with a sense of relief, if one rea= ds Shakespeare=92s works. The first period of the movement=92s history = =96 between years 1875 and 1891 =96 is no exception to the rule. In fact = it is the matrix of such an alchemy.=20=20 =20 Shakespeare=92s stories teach us lessons on the probationary process. In = his plays, we can see the contrast between utter treason and unconditional= loyalty to a higher Ethics, the ethics of the spiritual soul. Another sha= rp and burning contradiction present in Shakespeare=92s chemistry of human= soul is the one existing between human misery and illusion, on one hand, = and, on the other hand, the crystal clear spiritual vision of all life, w= hich gives the student an unlimited, transcendant freedom from pain.=20=20 =20 Perhaps Shakespeare can only be understood by seeing this sharp opposition= between the maya of suffering and the greatness of trancendance.=20=20=20 =20 That which William Shakespeare describes in his works is the incessant st= ruggle of lower self and higher triad in each human being who looks at an = ideal. It takes the attention of the upper triad to be able to see that= drama honestly, instead of closing one=92s eyes to it. Even looking at i= t is in itself a progress, if it is done with courage, and with an aim to = transcend and to go beyond. Reading Shakespeare enables us to undertand, t= herefore, the real implications of HPB=92s article =93Chelas and Lay Che= las=94.=20 =20 Shakespeare=92s plays also provide us with a nice viewpoint from which to l= ook at the History of the theosophical movement. This has been a story o= f human loyalty and treason to the ideals and to human beings. At times, = the characters of this story have used a combination of flattering and s= landering, as was the case of =93Iago=94. This has also been a story of p= ride and ambition, combined with fancy, false siddhis, =93occult status= =94 and blind belief. Yet there has always been a group of theosophists l= oyal to the Cause an not to any bureaucratic =91party line=92; a few =91wa= rriors=92 or Arjunas, relatively able and decided to fight illusion and= mischief within, and outside, themselves.=20=20 =20 If we accept that the theosophical movement has in itself all that is hum= an =96 side by side and in a living contrast with the seeds of a sacred e= nergy =96 perhaps we can look at it more honestly, with less illusion, a= nd see the inner spiritual light that keeps it alive in spite of everything= .=20=20=20 =20 Such a light is beyond struggle for power. It is beyond intrigues, envy, d= espondency, despair, slander, gossip and cunning. Theosophists are invite= d to challenge and to win over all these petty things. Robert Crosbie wrote= , and quoted H.P.B.:=20=20 =20 =93We need to bring again and again to the attention of all discouraged or = bewildered Theosophists what H.P.B. wrote to Judge in 1888: =91Night befor= e last I was shown a bird=92s-eye view of the Theosophical Societies. I saw= a few earnest, reliable Theosophists in a death-struggle with the world in= general, and with other =96 nominal but ambitious =96 Theosophists. The f= ormer are greater in number than you may think, and they prevailed, as you= in America will prevail, if you only remain staunch to the Master=92s prog= ramme and true to yourselves=92.=94 (1)=20 =20 For HPB and the Masters, to be true to oneself is the source of being tru= e to others, and in =93Hamlet=94 we read:=20 =20 =93This above all: to thine own self be true,=20 And it must follow, as the night the day,=20 Thou canst not then be false to any man. (2)=20=20=20 =20=20=20=20 =20 But the movement was never meant to be an easily harmonious group of tea-dr= inking friends ; nor a spiritual variety of Rotary Club. It is not suppos= ed to be a brotherhood of shells and shallow personalities; it is a school= for self-transformation, instead.=20=20 =20 That=92s why Shakespeare-Bacon has a lot of things to teach many a student.= His often bitter lessons are not only on how to live Theosophy in daily = life, but also about the inner, essential history of the theosophical movem= ent, both before and after 1875.=20=20=20=20=20=20 =20 Carlos.=20 =20 =20 NOTE: =20 (1) =93The Friendly Philosopher=94, Robert Crosbie, The Theosophy Company,= Los Angeles, 1945, 416 pp., see p. 389.=20 =20 (2) =93Hamlet=94, Act I, Scene III. =93The Complete Works of William Shake= speare=94, edited by W. I will take your short note as an excuse to submit you a=20 couple of ideas.=20 People often talk about "lower nature" as if it could not and should=20 not share one's inner life. As if it were intrinsically useless or=20 even harmful. It is not so, at all.=20 In fact, our "lower nature" is but the physical and emotional=20 foundations on which we must build our path, or our Walk along the=20 Path. Our "lower nature" must share the sacredness and the=20 sacrifice of the Path. It is not an enemy, but a friend of the=20 Pilgrim. It is the House, the outer Temple. Hence a good diet, the=20 right kind of exercise, moderation in all things, etc.=20 Our personal and animal nature must live on their own levels and in=20 their own way each step of ours along the path.=20 What I am doing today, as I ask whether the several testmimonies on=20 frauds done by Caldwell are correct, is something much more simple.=20=20 The question is that, if Caldwell is a fraud, that may be the=20 explanation for his apparent psychological fixation on fake letters=20 ascribed to HPB. Or his fixation about the ULT. After months attacking the ULT, there was a brief interval for=20 Chrsitmas and New Year and now Caldwell, as predictable as ever,=20=20=20 comes back with the same old stuff around false letters asctribed to=20 HPB. This has been among his main themes in 2007, as you know.=20 My hypothesis is that if Caldwell can renounce his own frauds=20 (David Green and so on) he will forget the slanders against the=20 founder of the movement. But I am not sure about that. The main point is though that, in Occultism, we must be aware of=20 what goes on at all seven levels of consciousness, with their=20 sublevels included in the picture, too.=20=20 Of course Theosophy is about Ethics, so if Daniel is a fraud he will=20 have a problem sooner or later.=20=20 Regards, Carlos.=20 =20 --- In theos-talk@yahoogroups.com, MarieMAJ41@... wrote: > > Carlos, the subject line you have used is an example of your=20 lower nature at work.
