We introduced the idea that even=20 our thoughts and emotions are vibrations created in subtle matter=20 which is not physical. Then we moved on to the physical and=20 spiritual atoms. We noted that forms in the physical world are made=20 of chemical elements which are in turn made of chemical atoms.=20 The chemical atoms are made of protons, neutrons and electrons. The=20 protons and neutrons are in turn made of quarks, three in each. And=20 the quarks are in turn are made of three numbers of the Anu, which=20 is the ultimate physical atom of the physical plane (UPA). Science=20 is yet to discover the Anu or the UPA.=20 The most surprising part of it all is that the UPA is only the=20 ultimate atom of the physical world, and that it is made of nearly=20 14 million bubbles of matter! Called ParamAnu, these bubbles are the=20 ultimate atom of matter of any plane. Yogis make use of the Anu and=20 the ParamAnu to materialize and dematerialize forms and for the=20 invisible travels that their tasks involve.=20 Next we turned out attention to the nature of the One God whose=20 manifestation is this universe and all the forms inside it. We noted=20 that this One God in his unimanifested state is known as the nirguna=20 brahman and that he manifests as saguna brahman, ensouling matter=20 with his consciousness or spirit, creating the Trinity and the whole=20 lot of the hierarchy of devas and other divine beings.=20 We noted with caution that the manifested forms create the maya. The=20 maya is not totally unreal but has a time frame for its reality. The=20 Ultimate Reality is the Brahman in his unmanifested form. The time=20 that limits the forms of maya flows in cycles, starting with the=20 conditional khanda kala known to us in the scale from seconds to=20 years and the cosmic cycles of time of yugas, mahayugas,=20 manvantaras, kalpas, pralaya and the ultimate mahapralaya, at which=20 time the Great Brahman would breathe back into himself all the forms=20 that he breathed out as manifestations.=20 Today we are going to inquire into the formation of the universe and=20 our solar system as manifested forms of the related deities, who in=20 turn are the manifestations of the One God Brahman.=20 Parabrahman-Mulaprakriti=20 "There are, assuredly, two forms of Brahma: the formed and the=20 formless. Now, that which is the formed is unreal; that which is the=20 formless is real, is Brahma, is light. That light is the same as the=20 sun."=20 -- Maitri-Upanishad, VI, 3=20 The name Brahma in the above quotation refers to Parabrahman.=20 A universe is both Parabrahman and Mulaprakriti in essence.=20 Parabrahman is the life or energy, Mulaprakriti his form. Without=20 Mulaprakriti, Parabrahman, the pure consciousness, or pure energy=20 would remain, but this is not possible. Without Parabrahman, the=20 Mulaprakriti would be lifeless and this is also not possible.=20 Therefore, energy and matter are two sides of the same thing.=20 Parabrahman and Mulaprakriti are two sides of the One God, who is=20 Parabrahman Himself, popularly called Brahman.=20 Call it space or koilon or mulaprakriti, Brahman is ultimately that=20 mulaprakriti. Call it energy or life force or spirit and=20 consciousness, Brahman hides it inside the mulaprakriti. Since=20 Brahman is the mulaprakriti, he is referred to as That in the=20 Upanishads.=20 Our body is essentially Mulaprakriti, manifesting in form.=20 Everything else is so: a star, a piece of wood, a beast, bird or=20 bacteria. As above, so below.=20 And there is a hierarchy. Everything is contained in something=20 greater. Every atom has its home in a molecule, every molecule in a=20 cell, every cell in a body, every body in a greater body, the=20 greater body, such as our earth, in the solar ether, the solar=20 system in a galaxy, the galaxy in a universe, and the universe in=20 THAT, the ultimate Space or Parabrahman.=20 Besides, there is a cycle of time or duration that determines the=20 life of a form. This we saw, originates from the Great Breath, and=20 operates in a constant secular cyclical diastole and systole,=20 similar to that of the human heart. In other words, the Cosmic Time=20 which is infinite, is the duration between Braman's breathing out=20 forms and breathing them in. The Costimc Time is infinite because=20 the creation cycle starts all over again after the mahapralaya.=20 The forms manifested by the Great Breath divide cosmic time into=20 conditional events of the solar and other discrete units of time.=20 The pure consciousness of Parabrahman activates our body and=20 everything else that has form. But this pure consciousness in us=20 humans is clouded by our tendency to associate our Self with our=20 body. This tendency is due to the cycle of births and deaths we=20 undergo, and the carried over samskaras.=20 We think that the night and day and week and month and year flows in=20 discrete units of time, its stream originating from the future,=20 gliding along the present into the past. The same sort of ignorance=20 we have and cherish, in thinking ourselves as apart from the=20 Creator, and keeping up that status.=20 We cherish this ignorance of association with our body and lower=20 self because we fear that as otherwise we will lose our identity. We=20 lose our bodily identify anyway when we die, but maya and our=20 samskaras send us back on a cycle of reincarnation by which we=20 acquire a new body and start associating with it.=20 A number of earthern pots are kept for sale by the potter. The pots=20 divide the aakaasha or space among themselves. Each pot has its own=20 share of space. Break all the pots and the aakaasha is seen to be=20 the ultimate reality, whether inside or outside the pots.=20 In the same way, we in our bodies think of ourselves as discrete=20 entities of Parabrahman, sharing a little each of his space, time=20 and consciousness. If we think beyond the body, we would realise the=20 Reality. The pot-body analogy is a famous teaching from Sri Adi=20 Sankara.=20 Trinity in Divine and Human Forms=20 As we noted earlier, Brahman manifests as the Trinity Shiva, Vishnu=20 and Brahma. These three forms have the names the First Aspect, the=20 Second Aspect and the Third Aspect in Theosophy, while Brahman=20 himself is known as the Logos. Other religions have corresponding=20 names for the three forms.=20 Every god and human in the hiearchy of creation has a trinity: atma,=20 buddhi, manas. The Shiva aspect is Atma or Consciousness or Will=20 power that ensouls all forms. The Vishnu aspect is Buddhi or=20 Intution or Wisdom that persistently guides souls that are in and=20 out of forms during their evolution. The Brahma aspect is the Manas,=20 the thinking and creating mind that spawns both good and evil. This=20 may be the reason why our Puranas say that both Devas and Asuras=20 were spawned by Brahma.=20 Koilon and the Bubbles=20 Before the universe and our solar system came into existence, there=20 was only the root-matter Koilon (Mulaprakriti). The term Koilon=20 derives from the Greek Koilos, meaning hollow.=20 The Koilon is roughly the ether of the Science, but it should not be=20 confused with the etheric matter that composes the first four of the=20 seven sub planes of the physical plane.=20 The space occupied by Koilon appears empty to the physical senses.=20 In reality, it is far denser than anything we know. Professor=20 Osborne Reynolds, whose theory agrees with occult investigation, has=20 defined its density as 10,000 times greater than that of water, and=20 its mean pressure is 750,000 tons to the square inch. Koilon is=20 perceptible only to highly developed clairvoyant power.=20 Koilon filled all space and was at rest. The One God changed this=20 condition by pouring out His spirit or force into a certain section=20 of the matter, a section the size of a whole universe.=20 The effect of the introduction of this force is like the blowing of=20 a mighty breath. It formed an incalculable number of tiny spherical=20 bubbles in Koilon. These bubbles are the ultimate atoms, out of=20 which everything we call matter is manufactured.=20 H.P. Blavatsky in her book The Secret Doctrine calls this force=20 (that originally formed the bubbles) Fohat. She speaks of it as=20 "digging holes in space".=20 A modern equivalent of "digging holes" to create the primitives of=20 matter is the way audio/video data (songs, pictures, movies and=20 computer data) is recorded on a compact disc (CD-ROM) or a digital=20 dideo disk (DVD). In this case, a laser beam burns holes called pits=20 on a smooth surface of the disc. The pits and the raised surface=20 bits grouped together, create patterns of data read by a computer or=20 an audio/video player.=20 Man, in his creations, imitates his Creator, whose consciousness is=20 active in him. As above, so below.=20 The bubbles are not like a soap-bubble, which is a film of water=20 with an outer and an inner surface, enclosing air within it. They=20 are like bubbles in soda-water, or boiling water, which have only=20 one surface, where the air meets water.=20 To the highest sight available, the bubbles appear to be empty, with=20 no apparent, inherent motion or rotation. Each bubble in reality is=20 a point of His consciousness, and persists only so long as He wills=20 to keep the enveloping Koilon in tact. These bubbles are the=20 ultimate atoms of which what we call matter is composed.=20 Even though the bubbles appear to have no motion of their own, they=20 can be moved as a whole from without, singly or en masse, by an=20 exertion of the will. No two bubbles ever under any circumstances=20 touch each other.=20 Having marked a spherical limit for His activity, the One (called=20 Logos in Theosophy) builds the universe inside the sphere, using His=20 manifested form Brahma (the Third Aspect).=20 This sphere where Brahma lived to form the universe is called=20 hiranyagarbha in Hinduism. The Upanishads describe it as a huge=20 golden egg, resplendent as the sun, where Brahma lived for a year,=20 and then divided it into two parts by his mere thought, and with=20 these two he formed the heavens and the earth; and in the middle he=20 placed the sky, the eight regions, and the eternal abode of the=20 waters.=20 Hiranyagarbha literally means the golden womb and is symbolic of the=20 birth of Brahma from this womb by immaculate conception. Hindu=20 Puranas state that Brahma was born out of Vishnu, and this is=20 symbolised by the umbilical cord that protrudes from the navel=20 (nabhi) of Vishnu and carries Brahma on a lotus flower.=20 Annie Besant in her book The Ancient Wisdom, sums up the teachings=20 of the sages about the One that created the universe, in this=20 beautiful passage:=20 "Within that sphere the universe is born, is evolved, and dies; it=20 lives, it moves, it has its being in Him; its matter is His=20 emanation; its forces and energies are currents of His Life; He is=20 immanent in every atom, all-pervading, all-sustaining, all-evolving;=20 He is its source and its end, its cause and its object, its centre=20 and circumference; it is built on Him as its sure foundation, it=20 breathes in Him as its encircling space; He is in everything and=20 everything in Him."=20 Birth of the Solar System and the Planes=20 When the Solar Deity (a manifested aspect of the One God) begins to=20 make his system, he decides to use the bubbles ready at hand. He=20 first defines the limit of his field of activity, a vast sphere with=20 a circumference far larger than the orbit of the outermost of his=20 future planets.=20 Within this limit of his activity, he sets up a kind of gigantic=20 vortex, sweeping together all the bubbles into a vast central mass.=20 Into this stupendous revolving sphere he sends forth, acting through=20 His Third Aspect, seven impulses of force, gathering together the=20 bubbles into even more and more complex aggregations.=20 The seven impulses or "breaths" of the Solar Deity, coming one after=20 another, over long perioda of time, create the seven planes of the=20 solar system.=20 Each impulse sets up tiny vortices all through the sphere. Each of=20 these tiny vortices draw into itself bubbles in multiples of 49,=20 depending on the plane created. The bubbles drawn together are=20 grouped in a certain shape, which forms the ultimate atom for the=20 plane created.=20 The Hindu method describes this process as follows: "Each plane has=20 what is called a tanmatra (literally, a measure of That), and a=20 tattva (literally, the inherent Thatness). The tanmatra is the=20 modification in the consciousness of the Logos: the tattva is the=20 effect produced in matter by that modification. Thus every atom has=20 its "Thatness", the divine consciousness.=20 Science admits that the physical atoms do not touch each other, even=20 in the densest element. Actually, the space between the atoms is=20 proportionately much larger than the size of the atoms. In the same=20 way, there is a large space between the nucleus and the electrons in=20 orbit. Each atom of Science is like a speck of dust in a large hall,=20 such being the proportion of space around it.=20 Therefore, the ultimate atoms of the seven planes interpenetrate=20 each other and the physical atom, occupying the same space. Every=20 planet in our solar system has seven planes, occupying an identical=20 space, interpenetrating each other.=20 These ultimate atoms of the planes are freely intermingled, so that=20 specimens of each type would be found in the smallest portion of the=20 sphere taken at random.=20 The grossest of these ultimate atoms of the planes are the ultimate=20 physical atoms (UPA), containing nearly 14 million bubbles! These=20 are drawn together into certain aggregations, thus making a number=20 of different kinds of what may be called proto-elements. These again=20 are joined together into the various forms which are known to=20 Science as chemical elements.=20 The process of formation of proto-elements and chemical elements=20 extended over long periods of time. As ages rolled on, the stage of=20 a vast glowing nebula was reached. As the sphere cooled, still=20 rapidly rotating, it flattened into a huge disc and broke up into=20 rings surrounding a central body which later formed our sun.=20 The Deity then set up in the thickness of each ring a subsidiary=20 vortex, collecting therein a great deal of matter of the ring, which=20 formed a planet round the central body. The collision of the=20 gathered fragments caused a revival of the heat, with the result=20 that the planet formed was for a long time a mass of glowing gas.=20 Graudally it cooled once more until it became fit for human=20 habitation, in the case of the Earth.=20 Each planet of our solar system is thus composed of the ultimate=20 atoms of the seven planes, interpenetrating each other, and sharing=20 the same space. The planes are called the seven planes of nature.=20 We shall discuss the details of the seven planes relating to our=20 planet Earth, in the next instalment.=20 Sources: 1. Incidentally my ABC model takes it a bit further, since it also describes how the inner mental image is assembled through the brain's neural network onto the brain's electrical field as an interference patterned hologram, transformed inductively to a series of analogous higher order electromagnetic fields (mind, memory, etc.), and detected/experienced at our single (zero) point of individual visual awareness located behind our eyes at the center of our head. Reductive or materialist scientists, of course, still cannot accept the idea that consciousness or "Spirit" is separate from matter and outside of all metric (or non metric) time and space. However, in order to picture this entire process geometrically, that might convince them, I would need an advanced 3-D computer animation system (Hardware, software and CGI artist/programmer) -- which, unfortunately, I haven't yet found adequate financing or collaborators, patrons, volunteers, etc., to obtain. :-[ Lenny [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] From eletzerich@yahoo.com Mon Dec 05 00:07:22 2005 Return-Path: X-Sender: eletzerich@yahoo.com X-Apparently-To: theos-talk@yahoogroups.com Received: (qmail 27441 invoked from network); 5 Dec 2005 08:07:22 -0000 Received: from unknown (66.218.66.166) by m28.grp.scd.yahoo.com with QMQP; 5 Dec 2005 08:07:22 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO web54112.mail.yahoo.com) (206.190.39.50) by mta5.grp.scd.yahoo.com with SMTP; 5 Dec 2005 08:07:21 -0000 Received: (qmail 51952 invoked by uid 60001); 5 Dec 2005 08:06:10 -0000 Message-ID: <20051205080610.51950.qmail@web54112.mail.yahoo.com> Received: from [83.171.216.254] by web54112.mail.yahoo.com via HTTP; Mon, 05 Dec 2005 00:06:10 PST Date: Mon, 5 Dec 2005 00:06:10 -0800 (PST) To: theos-talk@yahoogroups.com In-Reply-To: <128.6a95ef03.30c4fcab@cs.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Originating-IP: 206.190.39.50 X-eGroups-Msg-Info: 2:4:8:0 From: Erica Letzerich Subject: Re: Theos-World test message X-Yahoo-Group-Post: member; u=24163419; y=qxqnqgVGcE8mMTvO10pnbtefszuL4Wadyf_iZQ915VnU-lSVVw X-Yahoo-Profile: eletzerich Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit me too, Erica samblo@cs.com wrote: me too, John [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! One of=20 the refined forms of state hypocrisy in today's world is to award=20 every possible prize to the Dalai Lama, including the Nobel Peace=20 Prize, to receive him even at the White House, and at the same time=20 refuse to put real political pressure on China for a comprehensive=20 resolution of the Tibetan issue. If her own words and her Masters' words are correct, Tibet played an=20 important role in HPB's training before she founded the TS in 1875.=20 It was there, we are told, under the guidance of her Teachers that=20 she was able to "educate" her psychic nature and awaken the=20 necessary faculties for her future work of re-presenting Theosophy=20 to the world. She treasured her time in Tibet with great affection=20 as her letters to Sinnett show. Her Teachers and their Teachers lived there also and wrote about the=20 sacredness of some special places on that land: "At a certain spot not to be mentioned to outsiders, there is a=20 chasm spanned by a frail bridge of woven grasses and with a raging=20 torrent beneath. The bravest member of your Alpine clubs would=20 scarcely dare to venture the passage, for it hangs like a spider's=20 web and seems to be rotten and impassable. Yet it is not; and he who=20 dares the trial and succeeds =97 as he will if it is right that he=20 should be permitted =97 comes into a gorge of surpassing beauty of=20 scenery =97 to one of our places and to some of our people, of which=20 and whom there is no note or minute among European geographers. At a=20 stone's throw from the old Lamasery stands the old tower, within=20 whose bosom have gestated generations of Bodhisatwas." (ML 29,=20 chronological) In his 'On the Watch-Tower' notes (The Theosophist, April 1959), N.=20 Sri Ram wrote: "Tibet has always been an autonomous country, though=20 accepting a vague Chinese suzerainty. Probably it was thought by the=20 Tibetan lamas that so long as China herself preserved her=20 traditional ways and followed a policy of peace, the nominal=20 suzerainty would do no harm to Tibet; it might, on the other hand,=20 save Tibet from the danger of being a no-man's territory, open to=20 aggression from abroad. The trouble started only with the aggressive=20 policies of the Communists in China. Since Tibet has been, for all=20 practical purposes a self-governing country for centuries, not=20 competing with any other country, but self-contained in every way,=20 it has a claim to self-government on its own lines as much as any=20 other independent country or any group of people on the face of this=20 globe wanting to be free."=20=20 The Apartheid regime in South Africa was brought down by years of=20 economic sanctions and diplomatic pressure. The gross and inhumane=20 violations of human rights in Tibet do not evoke a similar response,=20 probably because of the size of the Chinese market and its booming=20 international trade. Most of the affordable goods available in=20 Australia are "Made in China". There is ocassional strong talk in=20 Washington regarding China's human rights record, but it soon=20 transforms itself into a nightingale's call to its mate when the=20 time comes to renew China's Most Favoured Nation status. For some there is no hope: Tibet, as it exists, will be totally=20 assimlated into the Han Chinese culture and the Potala palace will=20 become a Himalayan Disneyland. Others are too cynic to bother. It appears that the message is changing. Is it due to the fact that so many people are now strongly believing in the "end times" or apocalypse or what ever we would like to call it? I can see definite changes coming to the earth, but not what I would consider the "end". " THEOSOPHY links cataclysms with KARMA -- the universal law of compensation. "As ye sow, so shall you also reap."=20=20 There is no reason for a world-wide apocalyptic catastrophe, and none is forecast that I am aware of. There does, in recent months, seem to be an intensification of large earthquakes, cyclones, hurricanes, typhoons, etc, And I saw a scientific forecast saying that we may expect an intensificatio= n in the coming 11 years -- probably having to do with one of the Sun cycles that relate to our entire system and also to our Earth. Our civilization seems to be inviting=20 Ask yourself why this wide-spread fear?=20=20 What have individuals done secretly that might demand a purge of such enormous magnitude?=20 Have we in our earlier life done anything so bad that we are required to undergo any unreasonable stress?=20=20 Does anyone seriously think that penance and sacrifice now -- in terms of material goods and new disciplines -- are in any way compensatory ? If the= y do, then they ought to search for the CAUSES that can do this and cease fro= m generating them as of now.=20 Do you know about Karma -- in general ? Do you know about Catastrophes and their cycles? Do you know about the attraction of certain people to or from areas of catastrophe? Let me know and I will send you some material on these to consider. A careful study of universal history shows: there are some general and invariable rules of Nature (our World and Universe), These are not confine= d to, or defined by, any one religion.=20=20 Some examples --- 1 Nothing happens without a cause. The name given to this law is KARMA [action and reaction]. It is always compensation, always seeks to restore 'balance.' It is educative and not punitive. The same law operate= s whether it be a case of "good," or "evil." 2 Every atom of life exists and progresses under this single, uniform law. What does not get balanced in this life may be adjusted in a future one.=20=20 3 No atom, no soul, no spirit can ever be destroyed. All these "Life-units" are as ancient as the "beginning of Time." This means we have been living together for billions of years.=20 4 Each human, by their free choice, makes causes: good and bad.=20=20 5 Everyone has an innate and ineradicable sense of VIRTUE. [The criminal pretends to be virtuous. Why?]=20 6 The rules and laws of morality and ethics are the same for all, regardless of religion or politics. The "golden rule" prevails everywhere: "Do unto other as ye would have them do unto you."=20=20 7 It is in fact a working, sensitive, UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD.=20 8 All great prophets in every age have taught the same rules and ethics of living. 9 There is but one "God" in the Universe. IT IS THE UNIVERSE. WE LIVE IN IT. People give IT many names. 10 Mankind is a great family of Immortal Spiritual Souls. They live from life to life, ALWAYS PROGRESSING. This is called reincarnation. 11 The ultimate goal for all is WISDOM. 12 Wisdom teaches us compassion and continued care for and assistance to others - our brothers and sisters in this enormous scheme.=20 Best wishes, Dallas =20 =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D -----Original Message----- From: Cindy Chapman [mailto:cchapman1@adelphia.net]=20 Sent: Monday, December 05, 2005 6:19 AM To: dalval14@earthlink.net Subject: Re: NOVEMBER 17TH T S ANNIVERSARY Dear Dallas, I have a question that perhaps you can help me with if you are so inclined. I have of late been puzzling over the statement "Apolonius is the ascent, Jesus the descent." I have been looking at several sites to find information on Apolonius' life and the approximate times that he lived. I have conflicting information however. Some sources have stated that Jesus was born first, some Apolonius. Do you have any idea which is the factual, or where I may find more information? Also, I am greatly concerned with the so called appearances of the "virgin mary". I realize that some of these appearances are nothing more than elementals using the energies of those who pay attention to them as well as their ideas of who and what the "virgin mary" is. However, I was watching the History Channel yesterday and they showed an appearance of the "virgin" atop a domed cathedral. Science would call the process evolution...we, Occultists and Theosophists, see in it the only universal and eternal reality casting a periodical reflection of itself on the infinite Spatial depths. This reflection which you regard as the objective material universe, we consider as a temporary illusion and nothing else. That alone which is eternal is real...the universe passes out of its homogeneous subjectivity on to the first pane of manifestation, of which planes there are seven, we are taught. With each plane it becomes more dense and material until it reaches this, our plane...our Solar system (lik= e every other such system in the millions of others in Cosmos) and even our Earth, has its own programme of manifestations differing from the respectiv= e programmes of all others."=09 Key to Theosophy pp. 84-5 "Enquirer. I understand you describe our earth as forming a part of a chain or earths? Theosophist. We do. But the other six "earths" or "globes," are not on the same plane of objectivity as our earth is; therefore we cannot see them...It is only that their material density, weight, or fabric are entirely different from those of our earth and the other known planets; bu= t they are (to us) on an entirely different layer of space, so to speak; a layer not to be perceived or felt by our physical senses...by "layer" is that plane of infinite space which by its nature cannot fall under our ordinary waking perceptions, whether mental or physical; but which exists in nature outside of our normal mentality or consciousness, outside of our three dimensional space, and outside of our division of time. Each of the seven fundamental planes (or layers) in space...has its own objectivity and subjectivity, its own space and time, its own consciousness and set of senses. [ Like a different set of sense used in our "dream-life."]... Our philosophy teaches us that, as there are seven fundamental forces in nature, and seven planes of being, so there are seven states of consciousness in which man can live, think, remember and have his being...i= n waking and dreaming [we have good proof of the fact]." In olden times if used to be divulged only at the Initiation and along with the most sacred figures o= f the cycles...the key to their teaching is furnished by Atma-Vidya...for outside of metaphysics no occult philosophy, no esotericism is possible." SD I 168-9 "The universe evolves from the unknown, into which no man or mind, however high, can inquire, on seven planes or in seven ways or methods in all worlds, and this seven-fold differentiation causes all the worlds of the universe and the beings thereon to have a septenary constitution...the little worlds and the great are copies of the whole, and the minutest insec= t as well as the most highly developed being are replicas in little or in great of the vast inclusive original. The divisions of the sevenfold universe may be laid down roughly as: The Absolute, [or Space--that which ever is and in which all manifestation must take place...we can do no more than say It Is. None of the great teachers of the School ascribe qualities to the Absolute although all qualities exist in It.] Spirit, Mind, Matter, Will, Akasa or AEther, [ Akasa is used in place of AEther because English...has no word to properly designate that tenuous state of matter], and Life. Our knowledge begins with differentiation, and all manifested objects, beings, or powers are only differentiations of the Great Unknown. The most that can be said is that the Absolute periodically differentiates itself, and periodically withdraws the differentiation into itself. The first differentiation--speaking metaphorically as to time--is Spirit, with which appears Matter and Mind.=20 Akasa is produced from Matter and Spirit.=20=20 Will is the force of spirit in action and Life is a resultant of the action of Akasa moved by spirit, upon Matter. But the Matter here spoken of is no= t that which is vulgarly known as such. It is the real Matter which is alway= s invisible, and has sometimes been called Primordial Matter...Mulaprakriti ...we see or perceive only the phenomena but not the essential nature, body or being of matter. Mind is the intelligent part of the Cosmos, and in the collection of seven differentiations above roughly sketched. This plan was brought over from a prior period of manifestation which added to its ever increasing perfectness, and no limit can be set to its evolutionary possibilities in perfectness. Because there was never any beginning to the periodical manifestations of the Absolute, there will neve= r be any end, but forever the going forth and withdrawing into the Unknown will go on."=20 Ocean, pp. 14-15 =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Table from Secret Doctrine Vol. II, p. 596=20=20 Correspondence of the 7 Cosmic and 7 Human "principles." =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Human aspects or Cosmic aspects or Principles Principles =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D TRIPLE ASPECT OF THE DEITY 1. Let us fix permanent names to those, and say that:-- 1. Atma, the "Higher Self," is neither your Spirit nor mine, but like sunlight shines on all. It is the universally diffused "divine principle," and is inseparable from its one and absolute Meta-Spirit, as the sunbeam is inseparable from sunlight. 2. Buddhi (the spiritual soul) is only its vehicle. Neither each separately, nor the two collectively, are of any more use to the body of man, than sunlight and its beams are for a mass of granite buried in the earth, unless the divine Duad is assimilated by, and reflected in, some consciousness. Neither Atma nor Buddhi are ever reached by Karma, because the former is the highest aspect of Karma, its universal working agent of ITSELF in one aspect, and the other is unconscious on this plane. This consciousness or mind is 3. Manas,(*) the derivation or product in a reflected form of Ahamkara, "the conception of "I," or Ego-ship, and Taijasi (the radiant). This is th= e real Individuality or the divine man. It is this Ego which--having originally incarnated in the senseless human form animated by, but unconscious (since it had no consciousness) of, the presence in itself of the dual monad--made of that human-like form a real man. It is that Ego, that "Causal Body," which overshadows every personality Karma forces it to incarnate into; and this Ego which is held responsible for all the sins committed through, and in, every new body or personality--the evanescent masks which hide the true Individual through the long series of rebirths. (*) Mahat or the "Universal Mind" is the source of Manas. The latter is Mahat, i.e., mind, in man. Manas is also called Kshetrajna, "embodied spirit," because it is...the Manasa-putra, or "Sons of the Universal Mind," who created, or rather produced, the thinking man, "manu" by incarnating in the third Race mankind [Lemurian] in our Round. It is Manasa, therefore, which is the real incarnating and permanent Spiritual Ego, the Individuality, and our various and numberless personalities only its external masks." Key to Theosophy, pp. 135-6 "To avoid henceforth...misapprehensions, I propose to translate literally from the Occult Eastern terms their equivalents in English, and offer these for future use. The HIGHER SELF is Atma, the inseparable ray of the Universal and ONE SELF. It is the God above, more than within, us. Happy is the man who succeeds i= n saturating his inner Ego with it! The SPIRITUAL divine Ego is the Spiritual soul or Buddhi, in close union with Manas, the mind-principle, without which it is no Ego at all, but only the Atmic Vehicle. The Inner, or Higher "Ego" is Manas, the "Fifth" Principle,...independently of Buddhi. The Mind-Principle is only the Spiritual Ego when merged into one with Buddhi,--no materialist being supposed to have in him such an Ego, however great his intellectual capacities. It is the permanent Individuality or the "Reincarnating Ego." The Lower or Personal "Ego" is the physical man in conjunction with his lower Self, i.e., animal instincts, passions, desires, etc. It is called the "false personality," and consists of the lower Manas combined with Kama-rupa, and operating through the Physical body and its phantom or "double." The remaining "Principle" "Prana," or "Life, is strictly speaking, the radiating force or energy of Atma-- as the Universal Life and the One Self,--Its lower or rather (in its effects) more physical, because manifesting, aspect.=20=20 Prana, Life permeates the whole being of the objective Universe; and is called a "principle: only because it is an indispensable factor and the deu= s ex machina of the living man."=09 Key to Theosophy pp. 175-6 =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=20 -----Original Message----- From: zakk [mailto:seikar@adelphia.net]=20 Sent: Monday, December 05, 2005 2:17 PM To: Subject: Re: Progressive Stages of Meditation on Emptiness, >True. But the problem comes in when we are on a path to a goal, and perceive that we have reached the final goal, when we have not.> Who has stated that their final goal has been reached? >People tend to get stuck in their perceived permanences, and this is why I like Tsongkhapa's no-reifications-please viewpoint.> Individuals tend to get stuck on the astral plane as well (not counting the physical). Stuckness is a portion of one's experience at some point. Understandings generally are of a gradual procedure, although there has been a sudden path for some. The point being that understanding and compassion of one being stuck may be the optimal assistance that another may give a fellow being. << All of the above previously given avenues of thought can be seen as equally true by broardening or expanding one's awareness, perception, and understanding. >> > What if there was a methodology that would allow us to control our dreams, so that we could dream as we will? > There is and it is a part of one's path a some point. > And don't we wake, sooner or later, from a dream no matter its content?> How and what is the process of waking up? There are many forms of a dream. The dream of one in the human state is not the dream of another state. The human state can be considered and fall into the catagory of a dream from a different state as well. To view, think, and understand only from the human state will not resolve the unawarenesses it is presently experiencing. > In the former, a calm fancy would seem to be no more real than a nightmare, only more pleasant. In the latter, those who have pleasant dreams would seem to be just as stuck in dreamland as those who have nightmares.> Yes. >This being so, the first goal would seem to be to eliminate the nightmares in favor of calm fancies, while the second goal would seem to be to wake from all dreaming. Two different goals lead us down two different paths.> There is the that which is inbetween the two. It is the conscious direction of all dreams. This occurs prior to the no-dreaming and later than the attempted preference of types of dreams. << An example can be given on that which is said to be temporary and presenting a line of thought in which will show that temporary in also permanent. Time will be the main theme, Upon considering time as a past, present, and future; temporary can be seen an occurence of the past. In taking the day of July 7, 2005 as a chosen past occurence, the day is said to be in the past and of a temporary existence. Change has been experienced and the day of July 7, 2005 is said to be no longer in existence. This is a line of thinking of the timeful. >> >This would be experiential in that this is how most of us experience events. In this view time is a unidirectional arrow where future possibilities are converted into memories.> The emphasis is not on the individual but the day in which the individual experienced. After it is experienced, the individual is no longer relevant in the concept being presented, only the events of that day and the matter that composed those eventful experiences. << It can be seen that the day of July 7, 2005 is stll the day of July 7, 2005. It has not changed. The day of July 7, 2005 is, was, and will be the day of July 7, 2005. It is not temporary. It is permanent. What has changed is one's focus on the "timeframe" of what is being experienced. It is no longer on the day of July 7, 2005. Because one does not focus on a particular occurence does not mean it is not there, nor that it has dissipated.>> >This would be conceptual in that this is how most of us can conceive of events. In this view, the past is like a history book that can be read any time we want. (The problem that I have with history is that it tends to be a subjective interpretation of some historian.)> The individual and one's view of the "past" day is not relevant nor a valid application to what is attempted to be presented. << In the singular perception of the timeful, a sequencial experiencing of focus is necessary due to it's limited capacity. The timeless focus perceives July 7, 2005 when the timeful does not. >> >The timeful can also perceive July 7, 2005; it does so through memory and artifacts. I am not yet convinced that the one is any more accurate than the other.> The individual is no longer in the scenerio after the day has "past". Referencing is to the day itself. The individual is no longer in the scenerio. The events and the matter of which consisted of that day is still the matter and events that consisted of that day. In very mundane and inadequate terming, the day is still occuring and will always be occuring. It is permanently "there". One with the understanding may identify with that day versus this day. This would be viewed by many as a type of "time travel". Although the events and the day itself will not change or be different in any respect, the individual who chooses to identify with a "past" day may experience it in a different manner than the "first" experiencing of it. Memories are not what is being discussed here. < Because July 7, 2005 can no longer be perceived by the timeful does not mean it is not "still there". It is just no longer being consciously focused on and experienced. Because something can not be presently perceived does not mean it is not in existence. >> Perhaps if the example were to be re-read with the present comments made kept in mind, a different meaning of it will be possible. << Most can not perceive conditional (element) reality. It does not mean it is not in existence. >> >Agreed. But some would equate conditional reality to karma, being the causes and conditions that produce and sustain the living network that we call the universe.> Karma is not an object of matter like elements. To equate the two as the same does not appear to be sensible. << This is applicable to "time reality" as well. >> >Some believe that time is part of Motion where Space and Motion are the tw= o major continuums of our dualistic manifested universe. Some view time as a flow of teeny tiny moments, nanoseconds, where each moment has three parts -- a past, a present, and a future. The past part of any one moment attracts and brings forth the future part of the next moment, and so on. These folks see elements (ie Space) as comprised of monads and time (ie Motion) as composed of three-part moments. In this way they surmise that in addition to living beings, the continuums of space and time are also composed of aggregates.> Some utilize the observable, as in matter, to explain that in which is not matter. Perhaps utilizing matter to explain matter and non-matter to explain non-matter would be an avenue in which one may find more success in understanding the universe. << Therewith, the temporary is also permanent. >> >It is indeed. But this needs to be seen and understood without getting stuck.> A multiple perspective does not get stuck in a single perception. << Understandings that are of a single perspective are the kind presented t= o those of a single perspective, which is of the majority.>> >It is presented and accepted largely because it explains our experiences. Those with other experiences need furuther explanations.> Further explanations would only be understood by those of a desire to expand from the single perspective. How many individuals would you say fit that description? Certainly not the majority. It can be stated that when the majority is at that point, that such would be presented to the majority. << It is not for the majority, though, and not commonly exchanged or presented. Exoteric perceptions and understandings are more readily comprehended than esoteric. Esoterics would seem to be more confusing than of clarity to most individuals at this time.>> >It is the esoterics that give life to the exoterics which tends to atrophy into dead letter without it.> There is a saying "Give when it is receivable." There is a sensibilty to that saying.=20 --- You are currently subscribed to theos-l as: dalval14@earthlink.net List URL - http://list.vnet.net/?enter=3Dtheos-l To unsubscribe send a blank email to leave-theos-l-56348C@list.vnet.net From kier10@comcast.net Mon Dec 05 17:48:37 2005 Return-Path: X-Sender: kier10@comcast.net X-Apparently-To: theos-talk@yahoogroups.com Received: (qmail 30443 invoked from network); 6 Dec 2005 01:48:37 -0000 Received: from unknown (66.218.66.172) by m30.grp.scd.yahoo.com with QMQP; 6 Dec 2005 01:48:37 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO rwcrmhc12.comcast.net) (216.148.227.154) by mta4.grp.scd.yahoo.com with SMTP; 6 Dec 2005 01:48:37 -0000 Received: from usera62c0b3c73 (c-24-126-156-100.hsd1.ca.comcast.net[24.126.156.100]) by comcast.net (rwcrmhc14) with SMTP id <2005120601481601400cmd7ae>; Tue, 6 Dec 2005 01:48:17 +0000 Message-ID: <002001c5fa07$1efd50c0$6401a8c0@usera62c0b3c73> To: Date: Mon, 5 Dec 2005 17:48:13 -0800 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2670 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2670 X-Originating-IP: 216.148.227.154 X-eGroups-Msg-Info: 2:4:8:0 From: "DENNIS KIER" Subject: Re: Theos-World test message X-Yahoo-Group-Post: member; u=232467671 OK here. I have been reading them and they are very interesting to me.=20=20 I personally believe that Jesus did exist, but not as a personal saviour fo= r anyone but himself.=20=20 ----------------------------------------------------- DTB He did live and lives now. No one dies and is wiped out. Likewise, each of us has to "save themselves " using virtue as our guide. There is n= o alternative except as you suggest, the path of evil and of lies.=20 According to THEOSOPHY ( the universal ancient science of right living) eac= h of us has in our own ATMA (our 7th, the highest principle, a share of and i= n the UNIVERSAL ONE GOD) an ever-living equivalent of Jesus the WISE and COMPASSIONATE ADEPT.=20=20 We are each of us potentially a "Jesus."=20=20 But we have to determine and WILL to live as HE did. That is difficult. -------------------------------------------------- CC I also believe that he was very frustrated with all the need for secrecy surrounding the esoteric teachings.=20=20 DTB Agreed. THEOSOPHY teaches we each have the same access to "esoteric teachings."=20=20 They are not hidden. They are simply the ethics and morals of right and fraternal living. They have to be practised ALL THE TIME. Here they are, i= n a brief way: QUESTION "Virtue leads only to heaven. Wisdom leads to union with the whole.=A1=B1 What is here meant by virtue? ANSWER =A1=AAAccording to the dictionaries the radical meaning of virtue is= : strength. Other meanings are: bravery, efficacy, valor, moral goodness, th= e abstaining from vice, or conforming to the moral law. In this last sense th= e word is used.=20 There is nothing synonymous between virtue and wisdom.=20 In the Christian scheme "fear of God" is the beginning of wisdom. There is the mere wisdom of erudition, but properly wisdom means having knowledge or to know; or skilled in arts, science, or philosophy, or in magic and divination. (2 Samuel XIV.)=20 [DTB I ask: why should one "fear" GOD ? If the Law of the UNIVERSE is justice, then the "hands that smite us are our own." A wise One said: "Cease from evil. Do good. That is the "Way." ] In homely language, then, to be virtuous is to be good; to be wise is to possess knowledge. If the kingdom of God is the perfectness of evolution, then knowledge is what leads to it sooner than virtue. Of course these terms are used with th= e theosophical scheme of man and nature in view, and in that light it appears that in addition to virtue we must have knowledge, for a life of virtue leads to pleasures of devachan, with good karma for next life and thus through many lives; but knowledge added to virtue shows how to use virtue and its results in finding and treading the path leading to the Supreme which is ALL." F. Ans., pp. 27-8 "=A1=B0Subtle perception, spiritual knowledge, right judgment, patience, truth, self-mastery; pleasure and pain, prosperity and adversity; birth and death, danger and security, fear and equanimity, satisfaction, restraint of body and mind, alms-giving, inoffensiveness, zeal and glory and ignominy, all these the various dispositions of creatures come from me. =A1=AD=20 I am the origin of all; all things proceed from me; believing me to be thus= , the wise gifted with spiritual wisdom worship me; their very hearts and minds are in me; enlightening one another and constantly speaking of me, they are full of enjoyment and satisfaction. To them thus always devoted to me, who worship me with love, I give that mental devotion by which they com= e to me. For them do I out of my compassion, standing within their hearts, destroy the darkness which springs from ignorance by the brilliant lamp of spiritual discernment."=20=20 pp. 70-1 "My devotee who is free from enmity, well-disposed towards all creatures, merciful, wholly exempt from pride and selfishness, the same in pain and pleasure, patient of wrongs, contented, constantly devout, self-governed, firm in resolves, and whose mind and heart are fixed on me alone, is dear unto me. He also is my beloved of whom mankind is not afraid and who has no fear of man; who is free from joy, from despondency and the dread of harm.=20 My devotee who is unexpecting, pure, just, impartial, devoid of fear, and who hath forsaken interest in the results of action, is dear unto me. He also is worthy of my love who neither rejoiceth nor findeth fault, who neither lamenteth nor coveteth, and being my servant hath forsaken interest in both good and evil results.=20 He also is my beloved servant who is equal-minded to friend or foe, the sam= e in honor and dishonor, in cold and heat, in pain and pleasure, and is unsolicitous about the event of things; to whom praise and blame are as one= ; who is of little speech, content with whatever cometh to pass, who hath no fixed habitation, and whose heart, full of devotion, is firmly fixed. But those who seek this sacred ambrosia=A8D the religion of immortality=A8D eve= n as I have explained it, full of faith, intent on me above all others, and united to devotion, are my most beloved."=20 pp. 91-2 =A1=B0Fearlessness, sincerity, assiduity in devotion, generosity, self-restraint, piety, and alms-givings, study, mortification, and rectitude; harmlessness, veracity, and freedom from anger, resignation, equanimity, and not speaking of the faults of others, universal compassion, modesty, and mildness; patience, power, fortitude, and purity, discretion, dignity, unrevengefulness, and freedom from conceit=A8D these are the marks= of him whose virtues are of a godlike character. ...Those, ...who are born with demoniacal dispositions are marked by hypocrisy, pride, anger, presumption, harshness of speech, and ignorance. The destiny of those whose attributes are godlike is final liberation.=A1=B1 p. 110 =A1=B0Honoring the gods, the teachers, and the wise, purity, rectitude, chastity, and harmlessness are called mortification of the body.=20 Gentle speech which causes no anxiety, which is truthful and friendly, and diligence in the reading of the Scriptures, are said to be austerities of speech.=20 Serenity of mind, mildness of temper, silence, self-restraint, absolute straightforwardness of conduct, are called mortification of the mind. This threefold mortification or austerity practiced with supreme faith and by those who long not for a reward is of the highest spiritual quality. =A1=B0 pp. 117-8 ------------------------------------------------ CC It is that very secrecy that breeds mistrust, and mystery, which in turn in my opinion gives birth to religion, and religion as is practiced no= w is slavery, and worse in my opinion, it is deliberate slavery. Not by the elder brothers mind you. I think they understood his frustrations, but the= y also knew that the time was not right to accomplish what he wanted to accomplish, but he did lay the ground work for what will eventually come. CC But I also believe that there are "other" forces at work. This is a dual cosmos, that is the law.=20=20 So it only stands to reason that for every elder brother who desires to hel= p to free mankind there is the opposite who desires to enslave. I think it was they who helped to bring about the corruption of his teachings, as well as the corruptions of the teachings of many other great teachers. DTB Agreed, unfortunately there are those who lend their living to evil methods. But, better still: Consider then, that an active and living "Elde= r Brother" [The ATMA] resides inside us. We have to let Him/ IT run our living. We have to deny our living to any and all evil. Otherwise, we are hypocrites. We will not make any true progress. And this I would consider an "esoteric truth."=20 CC I do very much believe in reincarnation. I have an understanding of how it works and there is no doubt that we all have something that we are reaping the rewards or corrections for, or else we'd not be here. CC Tell me Dallas, if you would, what do you know about elementals? ------------------------------------ DTB At first hand I know little, but THEOSOPHY offers much. I will send you some of that to consider. (below) ----------------------------------- As always warmest regards, Cindy =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D ELEMENTALS =20 ELEMENTALS - KARMA STUDENT. - Permit me to ask you again, Are elementals beings? Sage. - It is not easy to convey to you an idea of the constitution of elementals; strictly speaking, they are not, because the word elementals ha= s been used in reference to a class of them that have no being such as mortal= s have. It would be better to adopt the terms used in Indian books, such as Gandharvas, Bhuts, Pisachas, Devas, and so on. Many things well known about them cannot be put into ordinary language. Student. - Do you refer to their being able to act in the fourth dimension of space? Sage. - Yes, in a measure. Take the tying in an endless cord of many knots = - a thing often done at spiritist s=A8=A6ances. That is possible to him who k= nows more dimensions of space than three. No three-dimensional being can do this= ; and as you understand "matter," it is impossible for you to conceive how such a knot can be tied or how a solid ring can be passed through the matte= r of another solid one. These things can be done by elementals. Student. - Are they not all of one class? Sage. - No. There are different classes for each plane, and division of plane, of nature. Many can never be recognized by men. And those pertaining to one plane do not act in another. You must remember, too, that these "planes" of which we are speaking interpenetrate each other. Student. - Am I to understand that a clairvoyant or clairaudient has to do with or is affected by a certain special class or classes of elementals? Sage. - Yes. A clairvoyant can only see the sights properly belonging to th= e planes his development reaches to or has opened. And the elementals in thos= e planes show to the clairvoyant only such pictures as belong to their plane. Other parts of the idea or thing pictured may be retained in planes not yet open to the seer. For this reason few clairvoyants know the whole truth. Student. - Is there not some connection between the Karma of man and elementals? =20 Sage. - A very important one. The elemental world has become a strong facto= r in the Karma of the human race.=20 Being unconscious, automatic, and photographic, it assumes the complexion o= f the human family itself. In the earlier ages, when we may postulate that ma= n had not yet begun to make bad Karma, the elemental world was more friendly to man because it had not received unfriendly impressions.=20 But so soon as man began to become ignorant, unfriendly to himself and the rest of creation, the elemental world began to take on exactly the same complexion and return to humanity the exact pay, so to speak, due for the actions of humanity. Or, like a donkey, which, when he is pushed against, will push against you. Or, as a human being, when anger or insult is offered, feels inclined to return the same. So the elemental world, being unconscious force, returns or reacts upon humanity exactly as humanity acte= d towards it, whether the actions of men were done with the knowledge of thes= e laws or not.=20 So in these times it has come to be that the elemental world has the complexion and action which is the exact result of all the actions and thoughts and desires of men from the earliest times. And, being unconscious and only acting according to the natural laws of its being, the elemental world is a powerful factor in the workings of Karma. And so long as mankind does not cultivate brotherly feeling and charity towards the whole of creation, just so long will the elementals be without the impulse to act fo= r our benefit. But so soon and wherever man or men begin to cultivate brotherly feeling and love for the whole of creation, there and then the elementals begin to take on the new condition. Student. - How then about the doing of phenomena by adepts? Sage. - The production of phenomena is not possible without either the aid or disturbance of elementals.=20 Each phenomenon entails the expenditure of great force, and also brings on = a correspondingly great disturbance in the elemental world, which disturbance is beyond the limit natural to ordinary human life. It then follows that, a= s soon as the phenomenon is completed, the disturbance occasioned begins to b= e compensated for.=20 The elementals are in greatly excited motion, and precipitate themselves in various directions.=20 They are not able to affect those who are protected. But they are able, or rather it is possible for them, to enter into the sphere of unprotected persons, and especially those persons who are engaged in the study of occultism. And then they become agents in concentrating the karma of those persons, producing troubles and disasters often, or other difficulties whic= h otherwise might have been so spread over a period of time as to be not counted more than the ordinary vicissitudes of life.=20 This will go to explain the meaning of the statement that an Adept will not do a phenomenon unless he sees the desire in the mind of another lower or higher Adept or student; for then there is a sympathetic relation established, and also a tacit acceptance of the consequences which may ensue.=20 It will also help to understand the peculiar reluctance often of some persons, who can perform phenomena, to produce them in cases where we may think their production would be beneficial; and also why they are never don= e in order to compass worldly ends, as is natural for worldly people to suppose might be done, - such as procuring money, transferring objects, influencing minds, and so on. Student. - Accept my thanks for you instruction. Sage. - May you reach the terrace of enlightenment! Path, June, 1888 =20 =20 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------= - =20 =20 ELEMENTALS - HOW THEY ACT Student. - Is there any reason why you do not give me a more detailed explanation of the constitution of elementals and the modes by which they work? Sage. - Yes. There are many reasons. Among others is your inability, shared by most of the people of the present day, to comprehend a description of things that pertain to a world with which you are not familiar and for whic= h you do not yet possess terms of expression.=20 Were I to put forth these descriptions, the greater part would seem vague and incomprehensible on one hand, while on the other many of them would mislead you because of the interpretation put on them by yourself. Another reason is that, if the constitution, field of action, and method of action of elementals were given out, there are some minds of a very inquiring and peculiar bent who soon could find out how to come into communication with these extraordinary beings, with results disadvantageous to the community a= s well as the individuals. Student. - Why so? Is it not well to increase the sum of human knowledge, even respecting most recondite parts of nature; or can it be that the elementals are bad? Sage. - It is wise to increase the knowledge of nature's laws, but always with proper limitations. All things will become known some day. Nothing can be kept back when men have reached the point where they can understand. But at this time it would not be wise to give them, for the asking, certain knowledge that would not be good for them. That knowledge relates to elementals, and it can for the present be kept back from the scientists of today. So long as it can be retained from them, it will be, until they and their followers are of a different stamp. As to the moral character of elementals, they have none; they are colorless in themselves - except some classes - and merely assume the tint, so to speak, of
