Re: Theos-World being gratefull for theosophy

In several my previous messages, I had mentioned the serious disconnect
between the organization and its leaders and the general public. More we
spend time on intellectual gymnastics and hair splitting of the words used
in the classics, it does not good to the average man in the street. There
may be elation and euphoria for the theosophists but this does not help the
world at large. TS was launched to help the world not some sort of mental
gymnastic entertainment.

The need to connect practical theosophy with the social issues was clearly
understood by HPB and HSO, even though HSO was a man of the world and women
before he joined HPB to launch TS. As soon as they both moved to Adyar, a
school was established for the children of the poor fisherman and also
started a Sanskrit School. HPB also was very vocal in her opposition to
child marriage in India.

Later, Annie Besant, who before joining TS, was active in several social
causes, took active part in several projects of importance to Indian
population. After her, the tendency was to go into cocoons, with the sole
exception of Rukmini Arundale, who was very active in the revival of Indian
Dance and Animal Rights Movement in India.

It is my hope that each one of us can get involved in some local social
issues and if we fight for the right causes, it would be right application
of theosophy in everyday life. Recently I came to notice that there are
several lodges with a handful of members and with no effort to let the
public know about the TS and attract new members. While we may be complacent
and cozy with small membership, increasing the membership is good for
everyone including the organization.
