Recently I was reading President Bill Clinton's bio "My Life".
There was a very interesting anecdote which surprised me. When he was in
college, during thanksgiving, one of his class mates took him to New York .
His class mate's family was living in a nice neighborhood which had nice
houses and (Clinton did not see any minorities). So he inquired his
classmate's dad if there are any deed restrictions in the housing
In the US, the land owner can put restrictions on the use of the land which
subsequent owners have to comply with unless the restriction is illegal. He
told by his classmate's dad that they indeed had deed restrictions as to who
can own and/or live in the neighborhood. The deed restriction was against
Jews. Jews cannot own/live in the neighborhood. Clinton was surprised. Of
course sometime after civil rights legislation, all deed restrictions based
on color, religion, or national origin etc were invalidated.
To see the above in NY was a surprise to me.
