I agree. And this is much more than what can be said of Tibetan Buddhism, for instance.
Several 19th century Dalai Lamas were simply assassinated during childhood because some of their high Rin-Po-Che tutors wanted to govern Tibet as they pleased.
See G. Barborka's "HPB, Tibet and Tulku" (I can give you more references about that if you want).
Present XIV Dalai Lama also escaped a high treason attempt against his life when young. It is described in Martin Scorsese's film "Kundum", on his life and filmed with support from Tibetan monks etc.
Needless to mention other religions...
