Thursday, July 26, 2001 Dear Friend: Broadly speaking an "Adept" is one who is a Master of one or several occult specialties. A Master is One who may be far above an "Adept" and may be able to cover many departments of occult learning. In Theosophy the two designations have been used interchangeably as none of us is able to determine what the levels and appropriate designations are. In any case they are unimportant, as the Adepts / Masters are ruled by inflexible laws (Karma), and do not make themselves known unless They determine that the Karma of an individual requires (for the benefit of the world and humanity) their approach. As far as I am aware none of us can determine if such a contact is necessary. They alone can do that. An important saying exists: "Those that tell don't know, and those who Know, don't tell." I would say this is an application of that If you read extensively through the original literature of Theosophy you will soon detect their influence. Look at the word that is commonly used in India to designate them: MAHATMA (GREAT - SOUL). RISHIS THEOSOPHICAL GLOSSARY (HPB) p. 278. S D II pp. 501-2 gives more details. A List of the Great Rishis is to be found in THE DREAM OF RAVAN p. 54. In any case, no Adept or Master (from our point of view) would accept any title. The title Elder Brother, or Brother, [ see ISIS UNVEILED , Vol. II pp 315-6 under LAGHANA SASTRA, and in MODERN PANARION, p. 61 is a report on the BROTHERHOOD OF LUXOR ] appears to be one acceptable, as they are in fact men who have made themselves wise through the study of Nature and her laws and who see the metaphysical basis for the practice of ethics. They say we all have that potential inherent and innate in us. The VOICE OF THE SILENCE (HPB) points out (p. 29) "...look inward, Thou art Buddha." If what we study as THEOSOPHY is the result of their collaborative study, then we may see that we have a great deal to learn and can easily devote a number of lifetimes to that. It is a good idea to look up in the THEOSOPHICAL GLOSSARY (HPB) the meaning of Mahatma, Adept, p. 6 [ ISIS UNVEILED I 509; Voice p. 14fn; ECHOES FROM THE ORIENT (Judge) p 13; HPB articles (ULT) Vol. I p. 319 Master of Wisdom: The SECRET DOCTRINE II 437-45; H.P.Blavatsky Articles II 118 Mahatma (Great Soul) THEOSOPHICAL GLOSSARY (HPB) p. 201 [ S D I 52, II p. 173 H.P.Blavatsky Articles I p. 213, H.P.Blavatsky Articles III p. 332, W. Q. Judge Articles II, p. 136, [ In Pali: RAHAT ] Rishi THEOSOPHICAL GLOSSARY (HPB) p. 278, S D II 501-2. One must understand the rationale of this. Mr. Judge explains the process of individual development that leads the human consciousness to illuminated SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS in The OCEAN OF THEOSOPHY -Judge pp. 60 to 63, p. 6 to 13. In the KEY TO THEOSOPHY (HPB) see pp. 288 - 300. Furthermore: No Adept will ever claim to be one, nor will any one who has actually encountered an Adept ever mention the event in public, or claim the acquaintance. What are the main differences between these two? ========================
